Vintage Japanese Tsuridoro Hanging Garden Lantern, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0235
A weathered brass tsuridoro with pierced hexagonal firebox, scalloped eave roof, and heart-cutout base -- a hauntingly beautiful relic of the postwar Japanese garden.
A tsuridoro is a traditional Japanese hanging lantern, suspended by chain from a garden pergola, gate beam, or overhanging eave to cast gentle candlelight across a nighttime garden path. This example, likely crafted in the early postwar Showa period, displays the hallmarks of handcrafted Japanese metalwork: a globular firebox wrapped in bold hexagonal lattice cutouts, a wide scalloped eave that channels rainwater away from the flame, and a stupa-form finial fitted with a hanging ring for suspension. The firebox features a hinged and removable lattice panel -- visible in the detail images -- allowing easy access for a candle or oil lamp. Heart-shaped cutout vents punctuate both the domed cap and the flared scalloped base, adding a quietly decorative touch consistent with popular mid-century ornamental metalwork. The suspension chain, forged in iron, shows heavier oxidation than the brass body, lending the piece a layered, time-worn character prized in wabi-sabi aesthetics. A fine example of vintage Japanese garden decor for collectors and Japanophiles alike.
Today, this tsuridoro translates beautifully into a variety of modern living spaces. Hang it from a covered porch beam or pergola with a battery-operated LED tea light for an evocative outdoor living room accent that requires no open flame. Indoors, suspend it in an entryway or beside a shoji screen as a sculptural focal point that anchors a Japandi-style interior. It also makes a striking tabletop display piece -- set on a wooden platform with dried botanicals inside the firebox for a wabi-sabi living room centerpiece. A truly unique housewarming gift for anyone drawn to Japanese vintage garden lanterns, vintage metalwork, or East Asian decorative arts.
