Vintage Japanese Bronze Tsuridoro Hanging Garden Lantern, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0535

A handcrafted bronze garden lantern with seigaiha roof, openwork cloud-scroll panels, and a gourd-form hanging finial -- a sculptural accent rooted in Japanese garden tradition.

A tsuridoro is a traditional Japanese hanging lantern, suspended by a ring or chain and used to cast soft, ambient light in garden paths, temple precincts, and residential courtyards. This Mid Showa example is cast in bronze and formed in the classic hexagonal pagoda style, with a sweeping multi-eave roof textured allover in the seigaiha wave-scale pattern -- one of Japan's most enduring auspicious motifs. The roof lifts to a double-gourd finial fitted with a sturdy hanging ring, confirming its tsuridoro classification. The lantern body features openwork panels cast with flowing cloud-scroll arabesques, their sinuous forms allowing candlelight or a small lamp to project intricate shadow patterns in all directions. A hinged door panel on one face provides access to the interior for placing a light source. The base skirt is bordered with a repeating seigaiha wave frieze, tying the design together with quiet elegance. The overall patina is a deep, aged bronze darkened to near black, with natural verdigris accents developing in the recesses -- the hallmark of an authentic handcrafted Japanese bronze piece that has been allowed to age gracefully over decades.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese bronze lantern is a striking statement piece that works equally well indoors or out. Hung from a garden pergola, porch beam, or courtyard hook, it becomes an instant focal point in any Japandi-style or wabi-sabi outdoor space -- place a battery-operated tea light inside to enjoy its cloud-scroll shadow play safely. Indoors, it makes a compelling living room accent or entryway display piece on a console table or shelf, lending a collector's gravitas to any curated interior. It also works beautifully as a unique housewarming gift for Japanophiles, vintage collectors, or anyone drawn to handcrafted Asian decorative objects. Its compact scale suits both intimate nooks and open shelving alike.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
