Vintage Japanese Tsuridoro Hanging Lantern, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0757

A striking mid-century Japanese hanging lantern with pagoda roof, openwork nature panels, and flower-form bells -- a wabi-sabi statement piece for any modern interior.

A tsuridoro is a traditional Japanese hanging lantern, suspended by chain from a garden gate, veranda beam, or interior alcove to cast a warm, patterned glow through its openwork side panels. This handsome example from the mid-Showa period is cast in dark patinated metal -- consistent with the bronze indicated in trusted records -- and embodies the quiet drama of vintage Japanese craft. The pagoda-style roof is rendered with exceptional surface detail, mimicking the bundled texture of thatched reed or bark shingles, and sweeps upward at each corner with classic upswept eaves. A gourd-shaped (hyotan) finial crowns the top, fitted with suspension rings that once held the original hanging chain -- now present but heavily rusted with age. From each eave corner hang small flower-form bells on short chains, adding a gentle acoustic charm to the visual richness of the piece.

Each face of the lantern body features a different openwork panel, making this a truly sculptural object that rewards slow looking. Two panels depict swirling clouds rendered in bold, interlocking relief -- a motif associated with celestial energy and changing fortune in Japanese decorative arts. The opposing panels show a leaping koi (carp) surging through stylized waves among water grasses, a classic symbol of perseverance and vitality. The base skirt carries an engraved wave-and-cloud border with small ventilation cutouts. In a modern home, this tsuridoro works beautifully as a living room accent or entryway focal point -- displayed on a shelf or console table with a battery-operated candle inside to bring the openwork shadows to life. It also suits a covered outdoor garden space or patio as a decorative lantern, or styled in a Japandi-inspired reading nook as a collector's display piece. A unique housewarming gift for design-forward collectors and Japanophiles alike.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
