Vintage Japanese Cast Iron Hanging Pagoda Lantern with Monkey Hook, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0531

A cast iron pagoda lantern with a whimsical monkey hook -- a rare and charming piece of vintage Japanese garden ironwork.

A toro is a traditional Japanese lantern, historically used to cast soft, atmospheric light in gardens, along temple pathways, and beneath veranda eaves. This hanging version is cast entirely in iron, formed in the classic pagoda silhouette with dramatically upturned eaves and pierced side panels -- some panels cut with crescent and circular apertures, others with bold irregular openings that scatter light in intricate patterns when a candle or tea light is placed inside. What makes this piece truly special is its cast iron hanging hook, which features a small sculptural monkey clinging to the curved arm -- a playful netsuke-inspired detail entirely in keeping with the folk-craft sensibility of mid-Showa Japanese ironwork. The whole assembly connects via a small wire ring, and a separate modern S-hook is included for easy display. The surface carries a deep, oxidized dark patina that speaks to decades of age and authentic character.

Today, this vintage Japanese cast iron lantern brings instant wabi-sabi aesthetic to any interior or outdoor setting. Hang it from a porch beam, a garden shepherd's hook, or a ceiling hook in an entryway or reading nook to create a moody, Japandi-style accent. Fitted with a battery-operated tea light, it becomes a completely safe and striking living room accent or bedroom decor piece. Its compact size and rich texture also make it a memorable housewarming gift or a gift for collectors of Japanese vintage ironwork and garden art.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
