Why Restoration Matters

Preserving Japanese Craftsmanship for the Next Generation

At Eastern Classics, restoration is more than repairing an antique. It is part of our mission to preserve and share the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship with the world.

Each antique and vintage Japanese tansu reflects the materials, techniques, regional traditions, and everyday life of the time in which it was made. By carefully restoring these pieces, we help preserve their history while preparing them to be appreciated and used for many years to come.

Preserving History

Japanese tansu were built to last, but decades of use, changing climates, humidity, dryness, and storage conditions can take their toll. Wood may warp or separate, drawers may become difficult to operate, joinery can loosen, and original iron hardware may corrode or become damaged.

Careful restoration helps stabilize these pieces while preserving the character, patina, and craftsmanship that make each tansu unique.

Protecting Authenticity and Value

The way an antique is restored matters.

Over-restoration, inappropriate finishes, replacement materials, or careless repairs can erase much of the character that gives an antique tansu its historical and aesthetic value.

Our approach is to preserve as much of the original piece as possible while making necessary repairs with sensitivity to its age, materials, and construction. The goal is not to make an antique look new, but to allow its original beauty and craftsmanship to remain visible.

Balancing Tradition with Modern Use

A well-restored tansu should not only be beautiful to look at — it should also function comfortably in a modern home.

Drawers should open smoothly, sliding doors should operate properly, hardware should be secure, and the structure should be stable enough for everyday use.

We strive to maintain the integrity of the original craftsmanship while preparing each piece for its next chapter as functional furniture, storage, and art within a contemporary interior.

Our Restoration Team in Japan and the U.S.

We work with experienced craftspeople in both Japan and the United States who understand traditional Japanese furniture construction and the special qualities of woods commonly found in tansu, including kiri (paulownia), keyaki (zelkova), sugi (cedar), and hinoki (cypress).

In Japan, our restoration specialists work closely with antique furniture using traditional techniques developed through generations of craftsmanship. Depending on the condition and character of each piece, the restoration process may include:

  • Careful cleaning while preserving the original patina

  • Repairing weakened joinery and structural areas

  • Adjusting drawers and sliding doors for proper operation

  • Repairing or stabilizing original iron hardware

  • Replacing missing components only when necessary

  • Refinishing surfaces sensitively while respecting the age of the piece

We also work with a highly skilled craftsman in the United States with decades of experience in fine woodworking and antique restoration. Having restoration expertise on both sides of the Pacific allows us to inspect, maintain, and prepare our furniture carefully before it reaches its new home.

Our Mission

Our mission is to preserve and share the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship with the world.

We collaborate with craftspeople in Japan to restore and showcase authentic antique pieces so that their stories, techniques, and cultural heritage can continue to live on.

When you choose an antique from Eastern Classics, you are not simply purchasing a piece of furniture. You are helping preserve traditional craftsmanship and giving a remarkable object from Japan a new chapter for the future.

Preserve the past. Live with it today. Pass it forward.
