Vintage Japanese Stone Kaeru Garden Figure, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0367
A hand-carved stone garden frog with boldly painted red eyes and a rich patina of moss and age -- a charming piece of vintage Japanese garden art.
A kaeru is a traditional Japanese stone garden figure, and the frog has long been a beloved motif in Japanese courtyard and garden design. Hand-carved from natural stone in the compact, squat posture so characteristic of these ornaments, this piece features a broad, rounded body, a wide expressive face with prominent bulging eyes painted in vivid red, and carefully incised toe details on each foot. The rough-hewn surface texture speaks to the hand of a craftsman working in a regional folk tradition, while the deep patina of moss and algae accumulated across the base and flanks confirms many decades of outdoor life. As a piece of vintage Japanese garden sculpture, it carries exactly the kind of wabi-sabi character that collectors and design enthusiasts prize.
This sturdy little figure translates beautifully into a modern home or garden setting. Nestle it among potted plants on a patio or deck as an outdoor garden accent, or bring it indoors to anchor a Japandi-style shelf, entryway vignette, or living room display. Its compact size makes it equally at home on a windowsill, a meditation corner, or a garden path. With its vivid red eyes and time-worn surface, it also makes a memorable and unique housewarming gift for collectors of Japanese vintage art or anyone who appreciates the quiet character of handcrafted objects with a long history.
