Vintage Japanese Lacquer Large Square Tray, Kotatsu Top Board, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0834-5

A bold large-format lacquered square tray with rounded corners and richly patterned red-and-black surface.

This vintage Japanese square tray features a broad flat surface with a slightly raised molded edge and softly rounded corners. The top is finished in dramatic mottled red-on-black lacquer, creating an intricate, almost swirling pattern across the face, while the reverse appears plain black. Its substantial square format and flat panel construction are well suited to use as a kotatsu top board, while also making it an eye-catching decorative surface in its own right.

In a modern home, this piece can be used as a replacement or display top for a kotatsu, or repurposed as a low tabletop surface, centerpiece base, or large decorative accent laid flat on a table or stand. The deep black border and richly textured lacquered field pair naturally with Japandi, wabi-sabi, and vintage-inspired interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
