A substantial square tray with a richly mottled red-and-black surface, designed as a striking top for a traditional Japanese kotatsu or low table.
This vintage Japanese large square tray has the form and finish associated with a kotatsu top board: a broad flat panel with rounded corners, a slightly raised edge, and a finished reverse. The front presents a deep red-and-black swirling pattern with scattered reflective flecks, creating a dramatic decorative surface that reads beautifully from across a room. The reverse is finished in black and bears centered Japanese characters, adding workshop character to the piece. Its generous square format and sturdy-looking construction make it well suited for use as a tabletop surface in a traditional or adapted modern interior.
In today's home, this tray can be used as a kotatsu top board, as a square tabletop for a low table base, or simply as a bold decorative panel when not in use. Its dark glossy finish and rounded profile pair especially well with Japandi, wabi-sabi, and vintage eclectic interiors. Whether incorporated into a functional floor-seating arrangement or displayed as a statement surface, it offers both utility and strong visual presence.
A handsome and versatile vintage Japanese board that brings bold pattern, depth, and functional character to a low living space.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
