Vintage Japanese Large Square Tray, Kotatsu Top Board, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0834-1

A large square Japanese tray with rounded corners, a richly mottled reddish-brown top, and a smooth dark reverse -- well suited for use as a kotatsu top board or decorative surface.

This substantial square tray features a striking mottled surface in warm reddish-brown and golden tones, framed by a darker border with softly rounded corners. The reverse is finished in a smooth dark tone, giving the piece a clean, versatile appearance from either side. Its broad, flat form and finished two-sided construction are consistent with a removable top board intended for a kotatsu or for use as a low tabletop surface. The decorative top has an expressive, almost marbled pattern with scattered reflective flecks that catch the light, while the raised perimeter edge helps visually define the square field.

Today this piece works beautifully as a kotatsu top board, a low table surface, or a large decorative board in a living room or studio interior. Its generous scale and warm lacquered finish pair especially well with Japandi, wabi-sabi, and eclectic vintage spaces. It can also be displayed upright when not in use, where its bold surface pattern reads as a strong graphic accent. A distinctive choice for collectors of vintage Japanese household pieces and functional decorative arts.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
