Japanese Tansu Style Vanity Chest Custom-Order Reference

Japanese Tansu Style Vanity Chest

Custom-order reference example only; the pictured piece is not available for purchase.

This Japanese tansu style vanity chest is a custom-order reference piece documented in elm wood with a dark mahogany finish and sized at 54”W x 24”D x 29”H. In this example, the vanity format combines a broad top for sink and counter use with a tansu-inspired arrangement of drawers, cabinet doors, and dark metal hardware.

Design and Function

Tansu refers to traditional Japanese cabinetry and storage furniture, often recognized by its practical compartment layout and prominent pull hardware. This vanity chest adapts that look for bathroom use, pairing the tansu-style cabinet front with a stone top and vessel sink configuration. The front shows a balanced composition with central cabinet doors, a bank of drawers on the right, and an additional top drawer, giving the piece the strong horizontal presence expected from a vanity of this width.

The dark mahogany finish emphasizes the cabinet’s clean lines and contrasts with the lighter countertop above. Slatted door-front detailing and curved dark pulls reinforce the Japanese-inspired character while maintaining a functional built-in vanity form.
