Antique Japanese Kimono Rack (Iko), Meiji period, circa 1868-1911 | SKU: 26M-0993-1

A two-panel hinged kimono rack with lacquered floral baseboard panels -- refined Japanese antique furniture for the modern home.

An iko is a traditional Japanese kimono rack used to drape, air, and display kimono and other fine garments between wearings. This handcrafted Japanese antique furniture piece features two open rectangular frames joined by a central metal hinge, allowing the panels to be angled for freestanding use -- a less common configuration that gives the iko a folding-screen quality. Each panel rises to a gracefully upcurved top rail, a hallmark of classical Japanese garment stand design, and is fitted with multiple horizontal rails for draping fabric at varying heights. The deep ebony-lacquered hardwood frame is complemented at the base by rich crimson-lacquered panels decorated with carved relief motifs -- flowers, scrolls, and botanical forms -- adding a layer of decorative craft consistent with quality workshop production of the Meiji era.

In a contemporary home, this antique Japanese iko works beautifully as a statement bedroom decor piece -- draped with a silk throw, linen scarf, or heirloom textile to bring warmth and visual texture to the room. It functions equally well as an entryway furniture accent, holding coats or bags with understated elegance, or as a living room display stand for lightweight decorative textiles and wall hangings. Its folding two-panel form also allows it to serve as a partial room divider or backdrop in a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. A distinctive gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture or Japanophiles who appreciate functional beauty.

A striking piece of Japanese antique furniture that brings the quiet elegance of Meiji-era craftsmanship into any modern living space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
