Antique Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Hibachi Basin with Phoenix and Diaper Panels, Meiji Period, circa 1868-1911 | SKU: 24N-203

A large blue-and-white ceramic basin richly decorated with phoenix panels and classical diaper motifs -- a striking example of antique Japanese porcelain craft.

A hibachi is a traditional Japanese heating vessel used to hold smoldering charcoal, warming a room through radiant heat. Large ceramic versions like this one -- wide-mouthed, deep-bodied, and beautifully decorated -- served both a functional and ceremonial role in the Japanese home, often displayed in reception rooms or entryways as much for their visual presence as for their warmth. This substantial basin is hand-painted in cobalt underglaze blue on a white ground, a technique central to Japanese antique porcelain production during the Meiji period. The exterior carries a bold diagonal swirl composition alternating open white panels -- each painted with a ho-o (phoenix) in flight among auspicious clouds -- with densely filled diaper and honeycomb ground panels. Encircling bands complete the design: a scrolling floral border at the rim, a Greek-key (sayagata-style) register near the base, and a wave-petal band at the foot. The unglazed interior shows mineral staining and water marks consistent with long-term use as a water basin, fish bowl, or planter -- all common second lives for large hibachi vessels.

Today this vessel translates beautifully into modern interiors. Its generous 18-inch diameter makes it a commanding indoor planter for a dramatic ficus, fiddle-leaf fig, or trailing vine in a living room or entryway. Equally at home as a decorative accent on a console table, garden terrace, or covered porch, the vivid blue-and-white palette pairs effortlessly with Japandi style, coastal decor, or classic blue-and-white chinoiserie schemes. It would also make a stunning statement piece displayed on its own -- a conversation-starting gift for collectors of Japanese antique ceramics or lovers of East Asian decorative arts. The scale and quality of the hand-painted decoration ensure it commands attention wherever it is placed.

A commanding piece of Japanese antique porcelain that brings the elegance of Meiji-era craftsmanship into any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
