Antique Japanese Blue and White Porcelain Hibachi, Meiji Period, circa 1868-1911 | SKU: 24N-203-10
A large-scale antique blue-and-white porcelain hibachi or cachepot, hand-painted with shishi, peonies, and auspicious objects in the classic Japanese export style.
A hibachi is a traditional Japanese vessel used to hold burning charcoal for indoor heating, though large porcelain examples of this barrel form were equally prized as decorative cachepots and planters in wealthy Meiji-era households. This substantial piece is hand-painted in vivid underglaze cobalt blue on a crisp white porcelain body -- the hallmark of Japanese antique ceramics produced during the late 19th to early 20th century, consistent with kilns active in the Arita region or related production centers. The main body presents a lively continuous scene of shishi (mythical lion-dogs) romping among full-blown botan (peonies), accompanied by auspicious objects including a brocade drum and interlocking geometric medallions. A scrolling floral band encircles the wide everted rim, while a bold upright lotus-petal border frames the lower register -- a compositional device common to Meiji-era Japanese antique porcelain of this scale. The unglazed, age-stained interior and plain flat base without a reign mark are consistent with domestic or export production intended as a display piece rather than fine tableware.
At 18 inches in diameter and 12 inches tall, this piece commands attention as a living room accent or entryway statement in any interior. Place a potted ficus or trailing philodendron inside for a Japandi-style botanical display, or use it as a dramatic floor vase filled with dried pampas grass or sculptural branches -- as shown in the product images. It works equally well as a large umbrella stand near an entryway or as a decorative planter on a covered porch or sunroom floor. A truly rare scale for Japanese antique porcelain, this hibachi cachepot makes an exceptional gift for collectors of Asian art, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese ceramics with genuine historical presence.
