Antique Japanese Blue-and-White Porcelain Hibachi, Meiji period, circa 1868-1911 | SKU: 24N-203-12

A large blue-and-white porcelain hibachi-style vessel hand-painted with a sweeping mountain landscape in the literati tradition

A hibachi is a traditional Japanese open-topped vessel used for holding burning charcoal to heat a room, and in larger ceramic form these pieces doubled as decorative showpieces for wealthy households and teahouse settings. This substantial drum-form vessel is crafted in fine white porcelain and decorated entirely by hand in rich cobalt underglaze -- a technique at the heart of Japanese antique ceramics since the Edo period and refined to great elegance during the Meiji era. Wrapping the full circumference of the body is a continuous sansuiga-style landscape: mist-shrouded mountain peaks, gnarled pines, tiled pavilion rooftops, and soaring birds rendered with the confident brushwork of Chinese literati painting that strongly influenced Japanese ceramic artists of the period. The upper shoulder carries a band of scalloped cartouches enclosing floral rosettes, while the lower register features a repeating scroll-and-lozenge border -- both hallmarks of high-quality Japanese blue-and-white ware from the late 19th to early 20th century. The interior shows the honest patina of long use, consistent with decades of service as a planter or brazier in a traditional Japanese home.

Today this striking vessel makes a compelling statement in any modern interior. Its generous opening and substantial scale are ideal for displaying a large potted plant or sculptural arrangement of dried botanicals, bringing a wabi-sabi aesthetic to a living room or entryway. Set on a wooden stand, it becomes a dramatic floor accent that anchors a Japandi-style space or an eclectic collector's room. It also works beautifully as a cachepot -- simply slip a potted houseplant inside to hide the pot while showcasing the hand-painted landscape. A rare and meaningful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique ceramics.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
