Vintage Japanese Kaba-zaiku Hikidashi Chest, Late Showa | SKU: 26J-0616

A compact Japanese kaba-zaiku hikidashi chest with a richly figured bark surface, black metal pulls, and a gold-inscribed back panel dated Showa 61 (1986).

This small tabletop chest is finished in striking cherry-bark style veneer with warm amber and deep brown variation across the front, sides, and top. The form features two small upper compartments above one wider lower compartment, each fitted with a dark metal bail pull on decorative mounts. The back panel is finished in black and bears a gold inscription reading Showa 61 along with celebratory wording and Matsumoto City mayoral reference, giving the piece a commemorative character. Inside, the compartments are plain light wood, contrasting with the lustrous exterior surface.

Its compact scale makes it especially easy to place on a desk, vanity, shelf, or entryway surface for organizing small personal effects. The layered bark pattern and modest hardware give it a quietly decorative presence, while the dated inscription adds collectible interest for admirers of late-Showa Japanese craft and presentation pieces. It works beautifully in interiors that favor natural texture, warm wood tones, and restrained traditional detail.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
