A compact black-lacquered hikidashi chest with gilt floral decoration and ring-pull fronts

This vintage Japanese hikidashi chest is a small tabletop storage piece with a glossy black exterior, three pull-out compartments, and a fitted plinth base. The front is decorated with a continuous gold-toned floral and vine design spanning the three fronts, centered by a large blossom with a pale inset accent at its middle. Each compartment is fitted with an ornate metal ring pull, and a red seal mark appears at the lower right front. The sides and top are plain and lustrous, giving the decorated front strong visual emphasis. The interiors are left in natural wood, creating a pleasing contrast with the dark exterior finish.

At 11 inches wide, this compact chest is well suited to desktop, vanity, or bedside use. It can be used to organize jewelry, stationery, sewing notions, letters, or other small personal items while adding a distinctly Japanese decorative accent to a room.
