Vintage Japanese Hikidashi Chest, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26J-0754-3

A compact Japanese hikidashi chest with richly grained wood, metal pulls, and bold carved medallion decoration across the front, sides, and top.

This vintage Japanese hikidashi chest is a striking small-scale storage piece designed for tabletop or shelf use. The case is finished in a warm reddish-brown tone that highlights the wood grain, while the front is arranged with multiple graduated compartments fitted with metal half-moon pulls. Carved and painted medallion motifs span several front panels, creating a layered decorative composition in dark brown, black, and muted red tones. Additional roundel-style carvings appear on the side panels and top, giving the piece visual interest from several angles.

Its compact proportions make it well suited for organizing small personal items in a study, bedroom, or entryway. The combination of practical compartmentalized storage and bold carved ornament gives it presence as both a functional furnishing and a decorative accent. It works especially well in interiors that mix vintage wood tones with Japanese or eclectic styling.

A distinctive vintage Japanese storage piece with bold relief-style decoration and a compact, versatile form.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
