Vintage Japanese Desktop Hikidashi Drawer Chest, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0754-2

A compact multi-drawer chest in boldly figured hardwood -- handcrafted utility meets natural beauty

A Japanese desktop drawer chest of this type was a common fixture on the desks of craftsmen, calligraphers, and office workers throughout the Showa era, providing neat, accessible storage for stationery, small tools, brushes, and sundry supplies. This example is distinguished by its striking drawer fronts, which display a dramatically striped grain -- likely boldly figured kaki (persimmon) or a similarly characterful Japanese hardwood -- creating bold dark-and-amber bands across each face. The carcass is constructed from a darker stained softwood, with rounded top corners that soften the otherwise clean rectangular silhouette. Each drawer slides on simple wooden runners and is fitted with a bar-style wooden pull carved from the same figured wood, keeping the design unified and unpretentious. The drawer interiors are finished in unfinished lighter wood, a hallmark of honest Japanese workshop construction from this period. This is a fine example of vintage Japanese craft -- practical, well-made, and visually arresting.

Today, this compact chest is as useful as it is beautiful. At just 10 inches wide, it fits comfortably on a home office desk as a stylish organizer for pens, paper clips, SD cards, or craft supplies -- a natural fit for Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interiors that prize honest materials and quiet utility. In the bedroom, it works beautifully as a jewelry box or nightstand organizer, keeping rings, earrings, and small accessories sorted in shallow, easy-to-access drawers. It also makes a thoughtful housewarming gift or a unique gift for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture and mid-century design. Wherever it lands, the eye-catching grain ensures it earns its place as both a working tool and a decorative accent.

A compact piece of vintage Japanese craft that brings bold natural texture and understated order to any modern workspace or home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
