Vintage Japanese Small Tea Chest, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26J-0436
A compact early Showa tea chest with a broad overhanging top, open shelf, small drawer, and sliding-door compartment, finished in richly toned wood with distinctive pierced side panels.
This small Japanese tea chest offers a pleasing combination of open and enclosed storage in a compact tabletop form. Dating to the early Showa period (1927-1945), it features a flat top spanning two side supports, each cut with a simple four-petal geometric opening that gives the piece a light decorative character. Beneath the top is an open shelf area, while the lower section is divided between a small drawer fitted with a metal bail pull and a covered compartment with two sliding doors and inset round pulls. The warm wood grain and darkened finish give the chest an inviting, time-softened presence.
Today, this versatile piece works beautifully as a tea chest, small countertop organizer, or desktop storage cabinet. The open section is useful for frequently reached items, while the drawer and sliding compartment keep smaller belongings tucked neatly away. Its compact footprint and balanced proportions also make it an appealing accent for a study, kitchen, or display shelf.
