Vintage Japanese Getabako Shoe Chest, Early Showa (1927-1945) | SKU: 26J-G0134

A compact vintage Japanese shoe chest with an asymmetrical facade, sliding upper doors, and a tall side cupboard suited to entryway storage.

This handcrafted Japanese getabako dates to the Early Showa period (1927-1945). Designed for entryway use, the cabinet combines multiple storage zones within a relatively narrow footprint: a pair of small sliding doors at the upper left, a lower section with sliding paneled doors, and a tall hinged cupboard running down the right side. The front is visually distinctive, with horizontal slat details across the upper doors, striking diagonal grain arrangement on the lower panels, and a warm reddish-brown wood tone that gives the piece presence without excess ornament. Interior views show open shelving sized for practical household storage, especially shoes and small entry essentials.

In a modern home, this getabako works beautifully in an entry or mudroom, where its mixed compartments can hold shoes, slippers, brushes, pet-leash gear, or seasonal accessories. Its compact depth also makes it useful in a hallway, studio, or smaller apartment where a full-size cabinet would feel too heavy. The varied front panels and aged wood surface lend it an easy wabi-sabi character, while the interior shelving keeps it genuinely useful for daily life.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
