Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Chest, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26J-0398

A compact wooden haribako with fitted upper tray and drawers, made for keeping sewing tools neatly arranged close at hand.

This vintage Japanese haribako dates to the Early Showa period and is made in a warm-toned wood with a gently rounded top profile and a simple plinth base. The front is fitted with five drawers in varied sizes, each with a small metal pull, while the upper section lifts away to reveal a removable tray insert. Inside the tray are long divided compartments and a smaller lidded section suited to organizing needles, thread, cloth notions, and other sewing implements. The straightforward joinery, practical compartment layout, and compact proportions reflect the purposeful design of traditional Japanese sewing furniture made for daily household use.

Today, this haribako remains wonderfully functional while adding quiet antique character to a desk, craft room, or shelf. It can still serve as a sewing organizer, or be repurposed for stationery, brushes, tools, or small personal accessories that benefit from separated compartments and drawers. Its rich wood grain, aged surface, and balanced form give it an understated decorative presence in both traditional and modern interiors.

A practical and beautifully proportioned piece of Japanese domestic craftsmanship, this Early Showa haribako brings both utility and warmth to everyday living.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
