A ko-bako, or small decorative chest, of this type was a popular desktop accessory in mid-to-late Showa Japan, used to organize stationery, accessories, and small personal items within arm's reach of a writing desk or vanity. This particular example is distinguished by its densely hand-carved drawer fronts, each covered edge to edge in swirling scrollwork and bold leaf forms that reflect the Western decorative motifs -- reminiscent of acanthus-style relief -- that Japanese craftsmen enthusiastically adopted during the postwar era. The carved faces are finished in a dark stained tone with lighter pigment worked into the recesses to accentuate the relief, while a sawtooth-notched border frames all carved edges with additional texture. The carcass sides, top, and back are finished in a smooth, deep dark brown -- clean and unadorned -- providing a striking visual contrast to the heavily ornamented front. The drawer boxes themselves are constructed of unfinished natural wood, consistent with Japanese production of the period, and each drawer is fitted with a small round metal knob pull centered within the carved composition.
