A bold mid-century Japanese square board with a richly mottled red-brown surface, rounded corners, and a contrasting black underside.
This substantial square tray is well suited as a kotatsu top board, with a broad flat form and solid-looking thickness that suggest practical household use. The upper face is finished in a deep red-brown ground with dense black marbling and fine reflective flecks throughout, while the perimeter edge is darker and lightly sparkling in appearance. Three small circular decorative inlays are set into the top surface, adding subtle visual rhythm to the composition. The underside is finished in plain black, creating a clean contrast with the more decorative face.
Today this generously sized board can be appreciated both for its original function and as a versatile decorative accent. It can serve as a kotatsu top board, a display surface for seasonal objects, or a striking tabletop element in a living space that values vintage Japanese design. Its square proportions, softly rounded corners, and graphic surface pattern give it a strong presence while remaining easy to incorporate into a wabi-sabi or Japandi-inspired interior.
A distinctive vintage Japanese board that brings character, texture, and quiet mid-century presence into the home.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
