Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Chest, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0571

A compact Japanese sewing chest with a lift-top compartment and graduated drawers, finished in richly figured veneer with warm mid-century character.

This vintage Japanese haribako is a practical and beautifully scaled sewing chest designed to keep handwork tools and materials neatly arranged. The front is fitted with several drawers in varied sizes, while the hinged top opens to reveal a shallow upper compartment with removable dividers and lidded interior trays suited to sewing notions such as thread, needles, scissors, thimbles, and fabric pieces. The figured veneer on the drawer fronts gives the piece a lively swirling grain, framed by darker wood edges that define its clean, orderly form. Inside, the lighter wood secondary interiors show straightforward utility construction typical of domestic storage pieces made for everyday use.

Today, this haribako remains wonderfully functional beyond its original purpose. It can still serve as a dedicated sewing organizer, or be used on a desk or shelf for stationery, craft tools, hardware, or other small household items that benefit from separated compartments. Its compact footprint makes it easy to place in a workroom, studio, or living space, while the warm wood tones and practical layout bring a quiet vintage presence to the room.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
