Vintage Japanese Bamboo Hanakago Flower Basket with Inner Water Tube, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0457-2

A signed artisan hanakago in richly patinated woven bamboo -- a classic vessel for ikebana flower arrangement, complete with a paired inner water tube.

A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used as a vessel for ikebana, the centuries-old Japanese art of flower arrangement. This handcrafted example features a tapered, ovoid body woven from flat bamboo strips in a bold open-lattice pattern, with the warm reddish-brown tones typical of well-aged bamboo basketry. The rim is finished with a tightly twisted coil wrap, adding structural strength and a refined visual border. A small loop at the top -- formed from twisted bamboo cord -- serves as a hanging or display accent. Most notably, an inscribed bamboo tag strip on the body bears what appears to be a maker's signature, pointing to named artisan production consistent with mid-Showa craft traditions. A cylindrical dark inner tube is included, designed to hold water and support flower stems within the open-weave body -- a hallmark feature of the hanakago form in Japanese vintage flower baskets.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese bamboo basket brings an immediate wabi-sabi aesthetic to any room. Use it as an ikebana display vessel on a dining table or entryway console, slipping a glass or ceramic liner inside to hold fresh or dried stems. Its sculptural form works equally well as a standalone living room accent -- a piece of Japanese craft art that needs no flowers to make an impression. It also makes a distinctive gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone drawn to handcrafted Japanese basketry and Japandi-style decor.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
