Vintage Japanese Bamboo Hanakago Flower Basket with Inner Water Tube, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0190-1

A handcrafted bamboo hanakago with a dark inner water tube -- a serene expression of wabi-sabi aesthetic and the Japanese art of ikebana.

A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used as a vessel in ikebana, the centuries-old practice of contemplative flower arranging. This mid-Showa example showcases the multi-technique construction that distinguished skilled basket weavers of the period: a flat square bamboo-rod base transitions into a tightly woven lower body that swells outward before tapering inward to an open vertical-slat midsection, and finally resolves into a neatly wrapped circular rim. The tall arched handle is formed from flat bamboo strips twisted together and secured at the apex and sides with knotted bamboo-strip lashings -- a detail that speaks to the deliberate artistry of handcrafted Japanese craft. A separate dark-stained bamboo cylinder, sized to sit inside the basket, served as the water insert that held flower stems in place, keeping the outer basket dry and display-ready. The warm honey tones of the split bamboo weave and the deep contrast of the darker lashing and inner tube give this piece an understated, organic beauty entirely consistent with the wabi-sabi aesthetic.

Today, this vintage Japanese bamboo basket translates beautifully into modern interiors with almost no effort. Set it on an entryway console or living room accent shelf holding a small potted plant or trailing succulent for an effortlessly Japandi style moment. Place a slim glass cylinder inside the inner tube and use it as a cut-flower vase on a dining table or bedroom nightstand. It also works as a stylish desk or bathroom organizer, corralling small items -- brushes, pens, or rolled hand towels -- with natural texture and quiet charm. A thoughtful housewarming gift for collectors of Japanese vintage craft or anyone drawn to handwoven natural decor.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
