Vintage Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Kago Basket, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0592-2
A handwoven mid-Showa bamboo kago with a richly patinated ovoid body, mixed weave patterning, and a lacquered base ring -- an enduring example of vintage Japanese craft.
A kago is a traditional Japanese woven basket, and this generously scaled example -- likely intended for ikebana flower arranging or decorative display -- showcases the refined basketry tradition that flourished throughout the Showa period. Crafted from finely split bamboo strips and finished in a deep reddish-brown patina, the vessel features a full, rounded body that tapers gently to a constricted neck before opening at a wide, reinforced rim. The surface is articulated through multiple weave techniques: a close diagonal twill wraps the upper shoulder and neck, while a bold interlocking star or hexagonal pattern dominates the lower body, lending the piece a sculptural complexity rarely seen in everyday Japanese vintage furniture or folk craft. The flat circular base ring -- finished in a warmer lacquered tone -- stabilizes the form and adds a considered decorative finish consistent with display-oriented basketry.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese bamboo basket earns its place as a striking standalone accent. Set it on a living room floor beside a low sofa or reading chair as a tall statement vessel in a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. Fitted with a simple glass or metal liner, it makes a dramatic vase for dried pampas grass, tall branches, or sculptural botanicals -- bringing an organic warmth to entryway furniture arrangements or bedroom decor. It also works beautifully as a planter surround for a potted indoor plant, disguising a plain nursery pot with artisan texture. A distinctive and unique gift for collectors of Japanese folk art or Japanophiles with an eye for handmade form.
