Vintage Japanese Bamboo Kago Basket, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0592-3
A rustic handwoven bamboo kago with an open lattice weave and warm two-tone patina -- a grounding piece for wabi-sabi and Japandi-style interiors.
A kago is a traditional Japanese woven basket used for everyday household tasks such as storing produce, carrying goods, or organizing the home. This vintage example from the Mid Showa period displays the unpretentious, utilitarian craft that defined rural Japanese basketry of the era. Split bamboo strips in two natural tones -- a deep reddish-brown and a honey amber -- are interlaced in a bold diagonal and cross-hatch pattern, creating an open-work body with generous gaps that reveal the basket's depth and structure. Unfinished bamboo branch ribs with visible nodes run along the exterior, lending a raw, organic character that speaks to handcrafted Japanese folk craft traditions. The cylindrical open-top form tapers slightly, giving the piece a quiet sculptural presence that is both sturdy and visually dynamic.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese bamboo basket becomes a versatile living room accent or bedroom decor piece. Set it on a shelf or tabletop to hold dried botanicals, rolled throw blankets, or bundled kindling for a fireplace -- its open weave lets the contents breathe while adding texture and warmth to the display. It also works beautifully as a cachepot for a potted plant, softening the look of a simple terracotta pot in a Japandi-style or minimalist decor setting. A thoughtful housewarming gift for anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese folk objects and natural materials.
