Vintage Japanese Bamboo Kago Storage Basket with Bamboo Node Cup, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0457-1

A richly hand-woven bamboo storage basket with a companion bamboo node cup -- a striking pair of vintage Japanese craft objects in warm reddish-brown tones.

A kago is a traditional Japanese woven bamboo basket used for household storage, produce, or carrying goods -- an everyday object elevated by the remarkable skill of the craftsperson who made it. This piece displays a generous globular body with a wide, flat base that flares slightly at the bottom for stability, rising to a narrow neck finished with a tightly coiled and herringbone-patterned rolled rim. The exterior is worked in a close plain weave that transitions into a bold herringbone pattern at the shoulder, giving the form visual rhythm and structure. Two knotted bamboo loop handles are secured on opposite sides of the neck, functional in origin and quietly sculptural in effect. The interior reveals an open lattice weave -- a hallmark of skilled Japanese bamboo craft -- and the base bears what appears to be a woven maker's mark or structural cross-brace visible from the underside. The rich reddish-brown patina is the result of decades of natural aging, lending the piece the warm, honey-dark depth that collectors of vintage Japanese craft prize. Accompanying the basket is a separate cylindrical bamboo node cup -- a naturally hollow section of bamboo sealed at the base by its own node -- finished to a warm honey tone with its own aged character.

In a modern home, this vintage bamboo basket makes a beautiful living room accent piece -- displayed on a shelf, sideboard, or floor as a standalone sculptural object in a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. Its generous opening and sturdy form make it equally practical as a bedroom or entryway organizer for blankets, magazines, or rolled textiles. The bamboo node cup works beautifully as a desktop pen holder, a small vase for dried stems, or a bathroom organizer for brushes and small tools. Together they make a compelling gift for collectors, a unique housewarming gift, or a thoughtful present for anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture and objects.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
