Japanese Kasa Bamboo Hat | Wall Decor & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-761

A beautifully hand-woven Mid Showa era bamboo kasa -- a rare survivor of Japan's rural craft tradition.

A kasa is a traditional Japanese conical hat, hand-woven from split bamboo strips and worn by farmers, travelers, and laborers to shield against sun and rain. This example, dating to the Mid Showa period, showcases the exceptional skill of Japanese bamboo craft -- known as take-zaiku -- with a tightly interlaced hexagonal weave covering the entire surface, from the wide open brim to the sharply pointed crown. The apex is finished with a neat coiled wrap of bamboo binding, a hallmark of quality hand workmanship. The underside reveals a woven oval headband insert, also fashioned from bamboo, which would rest on the wearer's head. The warm honey-amber tone and open lattice pattern are characteristic of genuine vintage Japanese bamboo craft, distinct from later machine-made imports.

Today this handcrafted Japanese bamboo hat makes a striking statement as wall decor -- mounted flat against a wall, its bold circular silhouette and intricate geometric weave create instant visual texture in a living room, entryway, or hallway. Its natural warm tones pair beautifully with Japandi style interiors, wabi-sabi aesthetic spaces, and boho or organic modern decor. It also works as a sculptural tabletop accent or photography prop. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese folk craft and vintage Asian textiles.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
