Japanese Sudare Bamboo Screen | Vintage Window Blind & Room Divider, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-746
A matched pair of handcrafted misu sudare -- finely split bamboo roll-up screens bordered in gold brocade, sold together as shown.
A sudare is a traditional Japanese roll-up blind or screen woven from thinly split bamboo, used for centuries to filter light, encourage airflow, and create a sense of refined privacy in both domestic and formal settings. The more finely woven variety -- sometimes called misu -- was historically associated with aristocratic and temple interiors, where its delicate, semi-transparent surface cast a soft, dappled light into the room. This Mid Showa-era pair exemplifies that tradition: each panel is densely woven from fine-split bamboo stalks in warm amber and honey tones, edged on all four sides with a gold-ground brocade fabric bearing a subtle floral pattern. The bottom edge of each screen is finished with a solid bamboo roller capped at both ends in the same gold brocade, and the screens are suspended by deep burgundy braided cords threaded through small cast metal rings at the top -- a detail that speaks to the care invested in even the functional elements of this vintage Japanese craft.
In a modern home, this pair of sudare screens brings instant wabi-sabi aesthetic warmth to any interior. Hang them as window blinds in a living room or bedroom to filter afternoon light while adding a layer of natural texture -- they work beautifully in Japandi style interiors alongside linen, rattan, and raw wood. Use them as a lightweight room divider or entryway screen to define a meditation corner or reading nook. They also make a striking wall installation -- mounted flat as large-format textile art above a sofa or bed, their amber tones and golden brocade border read as a painterly, organic statement piece. A truly unique housewarming gift for anyone drawn to Japanese design or natural materials.
