Japanese Take Hanaire Bamboo Vase | Floor Vase & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-936-2

A striking sculptural floor vase hand-cut from a single large bamboo stalk, with a natural root base and lacquered window opening.

A take hanaire is a traditional Japanese bamboo flower vase used in the art of ikebana (flower arranging) and the tea ceremony aesthetic. This impressive example is cut from a single thick-walled bamboo culm, preserving the natural nodal rings that give the stalk its characteristic segmented texture. The base widens organically where the culm meets the root, creating a stable, flared footing with spiraling growth lines that speak to the wabi-sabi aesthetic prized in Japanese antique craft. A rectangular window has been cut through the midsection of the stalk and carefully outlined in black lacquer, a refined detail that transforms a natural material into a handcrafted Japanese decorative object. The open top of the cylinder provides a generous mouth for arranging branches or blooms. Age-related patina -- including subtle surface checks and honeyed amber toning -- adds to its authenticity and character.

In a modern home, this large-scale take hanaire makes a commanding living room accent or entryway statement piece. Stand it on the floor alongside a single sculptural branch for a Japandi style moment, or use it as a dramatic dried-flower floor vase in a minimalist decor setting. Its warm bamboo tones and bold natural form complement both contemporary and wabi-sabi-inspired interiors equally well. It also makes a truly unique housewarming gift or a standout piece for collectors of Japanese antique folk art and natural craft.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
