Japanese Take Hanaire Bamboo Vase | Flower Vase & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-936-1
A sculptural two-section bamboo vase with lacquered black fittings -- a striking example of handcrafted Japanese bamboo craft from the early postwar era.
A take hanaire is a traditional Japanese bamboo flower vase, long associated with the wabi-sabi aesthetic of ikebana flower arranging and the Japanese tea ceremony. This striking example is constructed from two sections of thick-walled natural bamboo -- a cylindrical upper receptacle and a wider, tapered lower section -- joined by a bold open framework of black-lacquered bamboo uprights that give the piece an architectural, almost lantern-like silhouette. The warm golden-amber tone of the aged bamboo contrasts beautifully with the deep black lacquer of the connecting struts and rim fittings, while the natural node rings and textured base lend the piece a raw, organic character. The interior of the upper vase is finished with a dark lacquer lining, consistent with traditional Japanese craft practice of sealing bamboo vessels for use with water and cut flowers.
Today this vintage Japanese bamboo vase is as much a sculptural object as a functional one. Its tall, slender profile and two-tone contrast make it an ideal living room accent or entryway statement piece -- displayed on a console table, tokonoma alcove shelf, or floor beside a low sideboard. Slip a few stems of dried pampas grass or a single branch of cherry blossom into the upper opening for an effortless Japandi style arrangement. It would also work beautifully as a desktop organizer for tall items such as paintbrushes, pens, or rolled documents, or as a decorative accent in a home office or study. A thoughtful and unique gift for collectors of Japanese antiques or lovers of wabi-sabi minimalist decor.
