Japanese Toro Candle Lantern | Vintage Table Lamp & Wabi-Sabi Home Decor, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-575-2

A handcrafted wood and shoji paper carry lantern in the classic toro tradition -- portable, open-top, and quietly elegant.

A toro is a traditional Japanese lantern designed to hold a candle or small light source, diffusing a warm, soft glow through translucent shoji paper panels. This Late Showa-era example is a portable carry lantern built on an octagonal wood base, with a gently tapered body framed by warm-toned hardwood -- likely hinoki (cypress) or a similar fine-grained domestic wood -- and fitted with crisp white shoji-style paper panels on all sides. A graceful arched handle of bentwood or rattan rises from the base, anchored by a central metal candle spike mounted to the octagonal platform. The shade lifts cleanly away from the base, making candle placement simple. The overall form is understated and precise, reflecting the handcrafted Japanese aesthetic that defined quality domestic goods of this period.

In a modern home, this lantern brings an instant wabi-sabi aesthetic to any setting. Lit with a battery-operated tea light, it makes a striking living room accent on a low coffee table or sideboard, casting a gentle diffused glow through the shoji panels. It also works beautifully as an entryway accent, a bedroom decor piece on a nightstand, or a centerpiece for a Japandi-style table arrangement. Its portable handle means it can move easily from room to room or be used outdoors on a covered porch or garden table. A thoughtful and unique gift for Japanophiles or anyone drawn to minimalist decor with genuine historic character.

A beautifully preserved piece of vintage Japanese craft that brings the serene warmth of traditional toro lighting into any modern interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
