Japanese Toro Candle Lantern | Decorative Table Lamp & Candleholder, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-575
A handcrafted wood and washi paper lantern with an arched bamboo handle and built-in candle spike -- quiet elegance for any interior.
A toro is a traditional Japanese lantern used to cast soft, diffused light during festivals, garden gatherings, and household rituals. This Late Showa-era example is a refined portable version -- a tapered, octagonal-base body framed in warm-toned softwood, likely hinoki (cypress) or sugi (cedar), with panels of cream-white washi paper on each face. The washi filters candlelight into a gentle, even glow that is the hallmark of handcrafted Japanese antique lighting. The arched bamboo carrying handle fits neatly into the top of the frame and is fully removable, while the flat octagonal base lifts away to reveal a small metal candle spike set into the interior floor -- a practical detail that keeps a taper or pillar candle stable during use. The clean geometry and natural palette reflect the restrained wabi-sabi aesthetic that defined quality craft objects of the mid-to-late Showa period.
Today this vintage Japanese lantern is as versatile as it is beautiful. Place it on a side table or console as a living room accent, letting candlelight play through the washi panels for an instant Japandi-style atmosphere. It works equally well as bedroom decor -- set on a low nightstand or floor shelf, it casts the kind of warm, ambient glow that no electric bulb quite replicates. The removable base and handle also make it a striking minimalist decor piece when displayed unlit, its sculptural tapered silhouette standing beautifully on its own. A unique housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles who appreciate objects that are both functional and deeply rooted in Japanese craft tradition.
