Japanese Toro Hanging Lantern | Vintage Garden Lantern & Indoor Candle Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-576-1

A cast iron pagoda lantern with pierced scrollwork panels and a charming monkey-figure hanging hook -- a rare find in vintage Japanese garden decor.

A toro is a traditional Japanese lantern used to guide light through temple courtyards, garden pathways, and household shrines. This compact hanging toro is cast entirely in iron, shaped in the classic pagoda form with a broad, upswept roof, corner finials, and a scallop-edged base raised on sturdy corner feet. Each side panel is filled with bold openwork scrollwork -- spiraling and looping forms that allow candlelight or a small flame to cast intricate shadow patterns in all directions. A hinged door panel on one side provides access to the interior for placing a candle or tea light. The craftsmanship is consistent with mid-to-late Showa-era Japanese iron casting, when this style of decorative garden lantern was widely produced for domestic use and export.

What makes this piece truly special is its hanging hook -- a cast iron figure of a small monkey (saru) clinging to a curved iron rod, which loops through the ring atop the lantern's roof finial. In Japanese folk tradition, the saru is a symbol of protection and good luck, making this an exceptionally playful and auspicious detail. In a modern home, this lantern works beautifully as a living room accent piece on a side table or bookshelf with a battery-operated tea light inside, as a garden lantern suspended from a pergola or tree branch, or as a patio or entryway decorative accent that suits a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic. It makes a distinctive housewarming gift or a gift for collectors of Japanese antique metalwork.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
