Japanese Urushi Lacquerware Lidded Bowl | Vintage Serving Bowl & Decorative Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-782-2
A striking black-and-red urushi lacquer bowl with gold floral makie motifs and original wooden presentation box -- a refined example of vintage Japanese craft.
A urushi wan is a traditional Japanese lacquered bowl used for serving soup, rice, or seasonal delicacies at formal meals and ceremonial gatherings. This handsome piece is finished in deep black urushi lacquer on the exterior, contrasted by a vivid red-lacquered interior that glows warmly when the fitted lid is lifted. The outer wall is adorned with a delicate gold makie design of interlocking roundels enclosing seasonal flowers -- a classic motif rooted in Japanese court aesthetics. The lid features fine concentric ribbing turned into the lacquer surface, giving it a refined tactile quality, while a small upturned knob with a red-lacquered interior serves as an elegant handle. A maker's seal is visible on the interior base of the lid, and the piece retains its original kiri (paulownia) wood storage box, which is inscribed with the item's name in brushwork -- a hallmark of quality Japanese antique tableware presented as a gift or keepsake.
This vintage Japanese lacquerware bowl translates effortlessly into a modern home. Displayed open on a dining table or living room sideboard, it makes a striking decorative accent in a wabi-sabi or Japandi-style interior -- the bold red-and-black palette catching the eye without effort. The wide, shallow bowl is beautifully suited as a fruit bowl, a catchall for keys and small objects in an entryway, or a display vessel for dried botanicals or seasonal arrangements. Closed with its lid, the whole composition reads as sculptural tabletop art. It would make a distinctive housewarming gift or a treasured gift for collectors of Japanese antique tableware and East Asian decorative arts.
