Japanese Shunkei-Nuri Hanaire Flower Vase | Living Room Accent & Ikebana Display, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-782-1

A bold vermilion lacquerware flower vase with a sculptural silhouette, removable metal liner, and original signed wooden box -- a rare collectible from Japan's Late Showa craft revival.

A hanaire is a traditional Japanese flower vase designed for ikebana -- the art of flower arranging -- and this striking example represents the finest Japanese lacquerware craft of the Late Showa era. The body is formed in a generously rounded, near-spherical globe that tapers into a defined neck wrapped with fine incised rings, then flares outward into a wide, funnel-shaped mouth. Every surface is coated in lustrous vermilion urushi-inspired lacquer, the neck rings finished in contrasting dark lacquer to create graphic tension between the bold upper form and the weighty lower body. The base features a recessed black lacquer panel bearing a gold maker's seal stamp -- a hallmark of a named craftsman or atelier -- and includes a removable polished metal cylindrical liner that sits inside the neck, protecting the lacquered interior while holding water for fresh flowers. The vase comes in its original signed kiri (paulownia) wooden storage box, a strong indicator of a presentation-grade piece intended as a gift or collector's item. This is a handcrafted Japanese antique of the highest decorative quality.

Today this vivid hanaire flower vase works beautifully as a living room accent or entryway statement piece, displayed alone on a console or sideboard where its glossy vermilion finish draws the eye. The wide flared mouth and included metal liner make it perfectly functional for ikebana arrangements or a loose bouquet of dried branches, lending a wabi-sabi aesthetic to any modern interior. It also pairs wonderfully with Japandi style decor -- its sculptural, almost architectural form bridges traditional Japanese craft and mid-century modern sensibility. A unique housewarming gift or a standout addition to any collection of vintage Japanese lacquerware, this piece brings centuries of urushi tradition into a thoroughly contemporary home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
