Vintage Japanese Bamboo Ikebana Vase, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26M-144
A sculptural lacquered bamboo ikebana vase with a warm amber interior and deep tortoiseshell-brown exterior -- a refined vessel for Japanese flower arrangement and modern decorative display.
This vintage Japanese bamboo ikebana vase is handcrafted from a single thick-walled section of mature bamboo, preserving the natural cylindrical form and distinctive node rings of the original stalk. Likely dating to the Late Showa period (1966-1989), the piece has been finished with a rich lacquered exterior that has deepened over time into a dark tortoiseshell brown, beautifully contrasted by the warm amber tone of the interior. The top has been carefully cut open along its length to create an elongated oval mouth, allowing room for expressive floral compositions, branches, grasses, or seasonal botanicals.
Raised on four small bracket feet cut from matching bamboo, the vase has a subtle architectural presence while still retaining the quiet natural elegance associated with traditional Japanese bamboo craft. Its simple form, organic material, and restrained finish reflect the wabi-sabi spirit -- appreciating natural texture, age, and understated beauty. Designed for ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, this vessel offers a long, low profile that is especially well suited for horizontal compositions, branch arrangements, or minimalist seasonal displays.
Today, this bamboo ikebana vase works beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. It can be used with a kenzan or small water vessel placed inside for fresh flower arrangements, or displayed with dried botanicals, branches, reeds, or grasses. Its sculptural form and rich amber-and-dark-brown tones make it a graceful accent for a console table, entryway, mantel, shelf, or Japandi-style living space. Even without flowers, it stands beautifully as a decorative object that celebrates the warmth and craftsmanship of vintage Japanese bamboo.
