Japanese Ikebana Vase | Vintage Flower Vase & Living Room Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-812
A bold ikebana flower vase in vermilion red porcelain with gold floral motifs -- presented in its original wooden tomobako storage box.
An ikebana vase is a vessel specifically shaped to support the Japanese art of flower arranging, where the form of the container is as important as the blooms it holds. This striking Late Showa piece features a graceful hourglass silhouette -- wide at the mouth, cinched at the waist, and gently flared at the foot -- a profile well-suited to displaying a single stem or a spare ikebana arrangement in the classical moribana or nageire style. The exterior is glazed in a rich, matte vermilion red -- a color long associated with vitality and celebration in Japanese craft -- and decorated with elegantly painted gold iris-like blossoms rising on sinuous stems. The interior is finished in a cool celadon white, and the unglazed oval foot bears a maker's mark in underglaze blue, encircled by a fine blue ring. The piece retains its original sugi wood tomobako (presentation box), brushed with the artist's inscription -- a hallmark of a purposefully crafted Japanese antique ceramic.
Today this vintage Japanese porcelain vase works beautifully as a living room accent or entryway focal point, displayed alone on a shelf or sideboard with a single branch of dried botanicals for a wabi-sabi aesthetic. Its tall, slender profile and bold red-and-gold palette also make it a natural fit for Japandi-style interiors, where a single sculptural object carries the decorative weight of an entire vignette. Whether used as a bud vase on a dining table, a desk accent in a home office, or a collector's display piece on a mantel, it brings warmth and visual drama to any modern space. It would make a thoughtful and distinctive gift for Japanophiles or collectors of vintage Japanese ceramics.
