Description

Japanese Tansu Style Wardrobe

Custom-order reference example. The pictured piece is shown for inspiration and documentation and is not available for purchase. This Japanese tansu style wardrobe combines a full-height hanging cabinet with lower drawer and compartment storage in a two-section design.

Crafted from reclaimed elm wood and finished in a warm teak tone, the wardrobe highlights pronounced natural grain while pairing traditional Japanese-inspired forms with practical modern use. In plain terms, tansu refers to Japanese cabinetry and storage furniture; here that influence is expressed through the clean rectilinear form, blackened hardware, and the lower compartment detail that recalls kimono tansu design.

Construction and Storage Layout

The piece is constructed in two sections. The upper cabinet functions as a wardrobe and is fitted with a hanging bar for clothing, similar to a classic armoire. Paneled double doors open to a tall interior suited to garments, linens, or general household storage.

The lower section provides two drawers on soft-closing glides for smooth, quiet use. At the lower right, a hinged compartment door adds enclosed storage and introduces a historical tansu-style accent through its bold black hardware treatment.

Design Details

Blackened ring pulls and strap-style hardware create visual contrast against the warm wood finish. The broad overhanging rail between the upper and lower sections gives the piece a grounded architectural profile, while the simple panel layout keeps the overall look adaptable for Japandi, modern, or understated eclectic interiors.

This custom-order wardrobe can serve as a clothing cabinet, linen cabinet, or general storage unit in a bedroom, dressing area, or home office.
