Japanese Tansu Style Wardrobe
This custom-order reference piece is a Japanese tansu style wardrobe and is shown here as an example for inspiration; the pictured item is not available for purchase. Documented in re-claimed elm wood with a clear finish, this tall storage cabinet combines the clean lines of a wardrobe with details associated with tansu-style furniture.
In plain English, tansu refers to traditional Japanese cabinetry designed for storage. In this wardrobe format, the design emphasizes vertical hanging space behind sliding doors, with additional lower storage compartments integrated into the base.
Design Details
The cabinet is proportioned as a full-height wardrobe with two upper sliding panels, a broad overhanging top, and a stepped base. The lower section includes two drawers at left and a small cupboard-style compartment at right fitted with decorative black hardware. The upper interior is shown with a hanging rod, supporting its use for clothing storage.
The light, natural-looking grain and clear finish keep the appearance simple and architectural, while the tansu-inspired hardware and lower storage elements add character and function.
