Japanese Tansu Style Console Chest
This custom-order reference example is a Japanese tansu style console chest and is shown here for inspiration only; the pictured piece is not available for purchase. The manually documented specifications describe it as made of solid elm wood, with a teak finish, in a large console format measuring 78”W x 18”D x 39”H.
In plain terms, tansu refers to traditional Japanese cabinetry and chests designed with practical storage and a strong architectural presence. This console chest adapts that look into a wide, low storage form suitable for use along a wall, behind seating, or as a statement case piece.
Design Details
The front presents a paneled facade with long horizontal sliding doors, a hallmark feature of many tansu-inspired storage pieces. The photographs show one section opened to reveal interior shelving, supporting its use as a console chest with concealed storage. The broad top and clean rectilinear profile give it a substantial, furniture-scale presence.
The warm wood tone and simple hardware contribute to its restrained Japanese-inspired appearance. Side panel framing and the cabinet's long, horizontal proportions reinforce the console form described in the original specifications.
