Made to order

This custom-order reference example is a Japanese tansu style console chest and is shown here for inspiration rather than purchase. Documented with a solid kiri wood case and a teak finish, this piece combines the drawer-focused character of tansu with the open display and storage function of a console.

Japanese Tansu Style Console Chest

In Japanese furniture, tansu refers broadly to chest cabinetry designed for organized storage. This console chest adapts that vocabulary into a taller open-base form, pairing multiple upper drawers with two lower open shelves. The result is a practical piece for storing smaller items above while leaving generous shelf space below for display, baskets, books, or larger household objects.

The front presents a balanced drawer arrangement with three smaller top drawers over two wider lower drawers, each fitted with simple bail pulls. Dark corner hardware accents and a dark linear base frame give the cabinet a crisp outline that contrasts with the warm wood tone. The open stand and shelf construction create a lighter visual profile than a fully enclosed chest while preserving the structured look associated with tansu-style furniture.

Design Notes

This reference piece features a chest-like upper section supported on an open console base with two full-width lower shelves. The drawer layout, exposed pulls, and corner accents give it a distinctly tansu-inspired appearance, while the elevated form makes it suitable for use where both concealed and open storage are useful in the same piece.
