Japanese Tansu Style 5 Drawer Chest
Custom-order reference piece with compact vertical storage and tansu-inspired details
Overview
This Japanese tansu style 5 drawer chest is shown here as a custom-order reference example and is not available for purchase. Designed with a compact vertical footprint, it combines practical everyday storage with a clean case form, warm wood tone, and traditional-style black metal warabite pulls.
In plain terms, tansu refers to Japanese cabinetry made for storage, and this piece takes inspiration from that tradition through its simple geometry, drawer-focused front, and dark hardware accents. The tall, narrow proportions make it well suited to bedrooms, entryways, or other smaller spaces where efficient storage is important.
Design and Function
The chest features five drawers arranged in a straightforward stacked configuration. Each drawer front is fitted with a pair of black metal warabite-style pulls that create visual contrast against the lighter wood surface. A framed outer case and raised black open base give the cabinet a defined outline while helping it feel lighter than a fully enclosed plinth base.
The documented material is kiri wood with a light teak finish. The visible grain and restrained detailing keep the look versatile, allowing the piece to work comfortably in both classic and more contemporary interiors. This form is useful for organizing clothing, accessories, linens, or other household essentials.
