Antique Japanese Mino Rain Hood with Tightly Coiled Dome Crown and Long Cascading Fringe, Meiji Period, 1868-1911
A rare antique Japanese fiber rain hood -- handwoven with tightly coiled natural fiber and cascading fringe, a striking relic of Meiji-era rural craft.
A mino is a traditional Japanese rain garment woven from natural plant fiber, worn draped over the head and shoulders to shed rain during fieldwork or travel. This finely constructed example features a dome-shaped woven crown built up from tightly coiled rows of natural fiber, terminating at the lower edge in a braided binding from which long, lustrous fringe strands cascade freely -- designed by nature to channel water away from the wearer. A twisted fiber loop at the apex allowed the piece to be hung when not in use. The deep chocolate-brown coloration and rich sheen of the fringe are consistent with aged plant fiber, possibly derived from shuro (palm fiber) or a similar durable natural material. The quality of the coiling and the neatly bound fringe edge speak to the skill of a rural craftsperson working within a longstanding Japanese folk tradition of handcrafted rain gear. As a piece of Japanese antique folk craft, it is both a functional artifact and an expression of the wabi-sabi aesthetic -- beauty found in honest, weathered, natural materials.
In a modern home, this mino hood makes a compelling statement as a living room accent or entryway wall hanging -- its sculptural silhouette, cascading fringe, and deep earthy tones bring immediate texture and visual drama to any Japandi-style or wabi-sabi interior. Displayed on a hook or peg rail, it reads as a one-of-a-kind fiber art object that sparks conversation. It would also suit a home studio or meditation space as a grounding, nature-connected accent. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese folk art and antique textiles -- there is simply nothing else quite like it.
