Vintage Chinese Yixing-Style Cadogan Upside-Down Water Teapot, Peach Form, Signed Matsunaga "松永" | SKU: 26J-0658

An unglazed red-clay upside-down water teapot with a peach-like silhouette, molded relief decoration, and fitted wooden box

This unusual vessel is crafted in unglazed reddish-brown clay and formed in the distinctive Cadogan or upside-down water teapot style, with a filling opening set beneath the base rather than a removable lid at the top. The rounded body rises to a softly pointed peak that gives the piece a peach-like outline, while the surface is richly worked in low relief with figural and landscape-style decoration. A curved side spout and loop handle are integrated into the body, and the vessel stands on a short footed ring. A signed mark reading Matsunaga, "松永," is noted for this piece, adding another point of interest for collectors of studio pottery and specialty tea wares.

Today this piece offers strong visual appeal as both a conversation object and a display accent for a tea collection, shelf, or cabinet. Its sculptural profile, dense carved surface, and uncommon construction make it especially compelling in an interior that celebrates handcrafted ceramics and East Asian decorative arts. It pairs beautifully with other red-clay wares, scholar's objects, or a small tea service, and it makes a distinctive gift for collectors drawn to unusual teapot forms.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
