Vintage Japanese Carved Hardwood Tai-Form Lidded Box, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26J-0242

A striking hand-carved Tai-form lidded box in rich red-brown hardwood -- a charming piece of vintage Japanese folk craft.

A fish-form carved wooden box is a traditional Japanese novelty keepsake vessel, shaped entirely in the likeness of a tai (sea bream) -- fish that carry deep cultural symbolism in Japan, representing good fortune, longevity, and abundance. This handcrafted Japanese vintage craft piece is hollowed from a single dense hardwood block and finished in a deep red-brown stain that pools beautifully in the recessed grain, giving the surface a lacquer-like luster without lacquer coating. Every surface is alive with detail: individually incised scales cover the body and the removable fitted lid, while the head, eye socket, open mouth, dorsal fin, pectoral fins, and fan-shaped tail are all rendered in careful relief. The dorsal fin serves as the lift handle for the lid, which seats snugly within the body cavity. The unlined interior reveals the natural dark wood, smooth and clean. Pieces like this were popular Showa-era folk and souvenir craft objects, produced by regional woodworkers and collected as decorative keepsakes.

Today this vintage Japanese carved wood box translates effortlessly into a modern home. Set it on a living room shelf or entryway console as a sculptural decorative accent that sparks conversation -- its bold wabi-sabi aesthetic pairs well with Japandi style interiors and natural-material decor. Use it as a jewelry box on a bedroom dresser to hold rings, earrings, or small keepsakes, or place it on a home office desk as a catch-all for paper clips, coins, or memory cards. It also makes a unique housewarming gift or a standout gift for collectors of Japanese folk art and vintage Japanese craft objects.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
