Antique Japanese Suzuribako Writing Case, Meiji circa 1900-1911 | SKU: 26J-0515

A compact Japanese writing case with iron fittings, lift lid, and fitted drawers -- a practical Meiji-era piece for brush, paper, and writing implements.

This small wooden writing case is fitted with extensive iron hardware and a top carry handle, combining portability with orderly interior storage. The front shows two small upper drawers and one larger lower drawer, each with iron pulls, while the hinged top opens to a broad upper compartment. The underside of the lid and inner rim show dark ink staining and use marks, details consistent with a piece kept for writing materials and regular desk work. Its strong rectilinear form, reinforced corners, and darkened metal plates give it the handsome, utilitarian presence associated with Japanese antique furnishings of the Meiji period.

Today, this suzuribako-style writing case works beautifully as a desk organizer for stationery, brushes, letters, or small tools. It also displays well on a shelf, console, or study table, where the contrast of warm wood and blackened iron adds a distinctly wabi-sabi character. Collectors of Japanese antiques will appreciate its compact scale, functional drawer layout, and honest signs of long use.

A sturdy and character-rich Meiji-period writing case, offering compact storage and the quiet appeal of well-used Japanese craftsmanship.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
