Antique Japanese Kakesuzuri Portable Chest, Meiji circa 1900-1911 | SKU: 26M-821
A rare iron-strapped portable chest from the Meiji era -- handcrafted hardwood with a hinged lid, pull-out drawers, and forged iron hardware that speaks to centuries of Japanese craft tradition.
A kakesuzuri is a traditional Japanese portable writing and document chest, used by merchants, officials, and traveling scholars to secure valuables, correspondence, and personal effects while on the road. This example, dating to around 1900-1911, is a fine specimen of Japanese antique furniture from the late Meiji period -- a time when craftsmen merged functional ruggedness with quiet elegance. The body is constructed from a richly grained hardwood, possibly keyaki (zelkova), displaying warm amber and sienna tones deepened by more than a century of use. The exterior is reinforced at every edge and corner with hand-forged iron strapping, nailed with period iron tacks, giving the piece its unmistakable samurai-era aesthetic. A looped iron carrying handle sits atop the hinged lid, which opens to reveal a spacious open compartment ideal for storing flat items. Beneath the lid, a pair of pull-out drawers -- each fitted with a round metal knob pull -- provide additional storage, and the lower drawer features a period iron keyhole escutcheon, confirming its role as a secure lockable chest. Short bracket feet lift the base off the floor in classic Japanese cabinetmaking style.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese chest makes an exceptional statement piece with genuine daily utility. Use it as a jewelry box and keepsake chest on a bedroom dresser, where the wabi-sabi aesthetic of aged iron and warm wood creates a striking focal point. It works equally well as a home office organizer -- storing correspondence, stationery, and small valuables in the drawers while the open lid compartment holds documents or a notebook. Its compact footprint and portable handle also make it a beautiful entryway accent for holding keys, cards, and personal items. A truly unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates the depth of Japanese antique furniture.
